There are various types of depression in varying degrees.

Sometimes the term is used to describe a general feeling of sadness or non- motivation.

'Full blown' depression can cause the whole self to shut down - to cut off from

the world. It seems the self just cannot take any more in. This can be a natural

defence mechanism, to allow time for healing.

There has been a lot of success in working with depression to find the cause - what has been 'depressed'

down inside.

When this is found and released a person can go forward with renewed energy.

Therapy through Sunshine Project works in this way. Cognitive Analytical Therapy explores

the past and the present, and using psychology can give answers to clients questions

of why? and how?. Releasing a part of the self that has been suppressed or dealing

with feelings that have been suppressed, can give renewed energy to be used in

a positive way.

Sometimes the way we do life is not good for us but we do not necessarily realise this. If we push ourselves too hard over the years, things can build up and can become  'too much'. This can cause reactions in behaviour and we may find ourselves expressing for example anxiety, fear, panic, low mood, lack of energy, insomnia. Sometimes behaviour can seem bizarre. Tim Cantopher a psychiatrist, wrote 'Depressive Illness the Curse of the Strong', and indeed it is only the strong that can push themselves to these limits.

CAT therapy can help a person understand what is happening to them, help to put them in touch with who they really are, give tools for healing and new thinking, for ways to do a future life that is right for them.
